30 New Days - Day 18

The 18h  day of a 30 day devotional Bible Study by the Rev. Tracy A. Siegman, Senior Pastor FCC, Covington, KY.  Shared with her gracious permission.

If you read the suggested passage each day, by the end of 30 days you will have read the entire New Testament.
Day 18
30-day reading plan: Romans 1 – 8

Daily Verse: Romans 5: 1
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

We are justified by faith. That work is complete in the work of Jesus Christ as we believe in Him. We were condemned by God but reconciled through faith. Justification is done, but that is not the end of our journey.

Sanctification, the work of being made holy, is a process. We may feel shameful for our continued
sin. However, we have the gift of the Holy Spirit who is working in us to make us holy so that we don't feel like we are forever doing the wrong thing. The Holy Spirit guides us in making different choices in accordance with grace. Even when we feel ashamed, even when we feel like we keep messing up, even when we feel like we can't do anything right, we are assured that nothing separates us from God.

It is the righteousness of God revealed in the Gospel news of Christ's atonement that through faith we have life. We have all sinned. We all through faith are reconciled and justified by grace through the redeeming work of Christ Jesus, even as we are being sanctified.

By grace we can stand before God, whole, perfect and complete and be loved. There is no need to think that suffering is some punishment for something we did wrong or a test of our faith. God doesn’t find joy in seeing us suffer. Suffering is an unfortunate part of this life, but it is not in vain. Our endurance through the suffering leads to hope in the promise that God will work it out for good and that our endurance will make us strong. We will come through it on the other side by grace, even if a little worn and weary. We are better for having gone through it.

Question for reflection:
How do you discern God’s sanctifying work in leading you to righteousness over your human propensity to sin?
